Initially developed from an order given by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Fairlington was constructed to house defense workers and their families during a housing shortage in DC during World War II. After the war, the project was sold and Fairlington became home to many newly appointed or elected government officials. In 1972, condominium conversion began and was completed in 1978. Today, Fairlington is comprised of seven condominium associations. With its Brick colonial style and slate roofs, Fairlington is a well preserved example of the Colonial Revival style in Northern Virginia and in the Washington Metropolitan area.
A wide range of residents enjoy Fairlington's townhouse and apartment style units in a unique park like setting comprised of clean tree lined streets, an abundance of green space common areas, playgrounds, tennis and basketball courts, two community centers, a weekend Farmer's Market, dog park and pools. Fairlington is ideal for people with pets, unlike many condos in the area, there are no size restriction on pets. The Fairlington Citizens Association organizes several events (Fairlington Day, Fairlington 5k, July 4 th Parade, and Fire Station Santa) bringing residents together throughout the year.
Residents enjoy the close access to plenty of shopping, dining and entertaining options in Shirlington, Old Town Alexandria, and Bradlee Shopping Center. Fairlington is a unique and historically significant community only minutes from Washington, DC located adjacent to Shirlington in the southernmost part of the county on the boundary with the City of Alexandria. Fairlington provides residents easy access to I-395, King Street (Route 7), Quaker Lane, and Walter Reed Drive.
